Four Named to Academic All-America At-Large Team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle Athletics program had four individuals named to the Capital One Academic All-America College Division Men's At-Large Team, which was released on Monday. Patrick Besch, Simon Felix and Deni Zmak were named to the first team, while Sneh Patel garnered second team honors.

Besch, Felix and Zmak helped the men's tennis team to the program's 10th regular season and conference tournament titles, as well as a runner-up finish at the NAIA National Tournament in 2014. Besch (Mainz, Germany) was named a first team All-American for the third time in his college career in 2014. The 2011 national doubles champion and 2012 national champion in singles, Besch rebounded from an injury that sidelined him in the fall to cap his collegiate tenure with a 16-6 singles ledger.  A second team All-Conference selection, NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Conference recognition, and graduated from Embry-Riddle with a 3.73 GPA in Business Administration.

Monday's honor marked Felix's (Geneva, Switzerland) third appearance on the Academic All-America roster and his 3.85 GPA in Air Traffic Management also afforded him NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Conference honors. One of the most decorated student-athletes in ERAU tennis history, he teamed up with Zmak to win the ITA/NAIA National Doubles title as well as the ITA Super Bowl crown. The duo went wire-to-wire as the top-ranked doubles team in the NAIA and was named The Sun Conference Doubles Team of the Year accolade. Felix was named to the All-Conference first team for the fourth time and was the league's Champions of Character Award Winner for the second time in three seasons. The 2014 ITA/NAIA South Region Player of the Year, Felix, who reached 30 doubles wins in three of his four seasons, is the Eagles' all-time leader in that category with 116 and ranks second on ERAU's career singles wins list with 101 after posting a 24-3 ledger in 2014.

A sophomore with the Eagles, Zmak (Pula, Croatia) wrapped up his second season at ERAU with a 3.45 GPA in Software Engineering. He made his second appearance on the NAIA and ITA All-America rosters, closing out the year with an ERAU single-second singles record 32-4 ledger. Zmak enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2013-14, which include wrapping up his second Sun Conference Player of the Year honor.  Ini addition to winning the ITA/NAIA National Doubles championship with Felix, he brought home the ITA/NAIA National singles title and became the first in ERAU history to win both the singles and doubles Super Bowls crowns. Zmak and Felix also set a program record for single season doubles wins with a 33-5 mark.

The lone senior on the men's golf team, Patel (Limbe, Malawi) posted a 3.73 GPA in Aeronautical Engineering. As a senior, Patel averaged 75.6 strokes per round with a low round of 69. Patel led the Eagles at the 2014 National Championships finishing tied for 54th overall with a 72-hole total of 224 (76-74-4). He also closed out his career as a two-time NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Conference selection, and is a member of the Eagles' sub-70 club, shooting a 69 in 2012 and a 69 in 2014.

The Capital One College Division Academic All-America® men's and women's at-large teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions and are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The Capital One Academic All-America® at-large group includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, volleyball and wrestling.
