ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team trailed by as many as 15 points late in the second half on Wednesday, but managed to claw back to within three with just over a minute left before the host Tritons pulled away late for a 60-52 victory over the Eagles in the McArthur Center. The Eagles (12-9) shot their lowest percentage from the field in over a decade as the Tritons (19-5) held ERAU to just 16 first-half points en route to the win.
The Blue and Gold got a game-high 17 points from
Dillon Graham and 12 points from
Ognjen Miljkovic, but as a team, the Eagles shot just 28.1 percent, and 30 percent from long range (9-for-30), and still were able to get to within a three-pointer from tying the game late.
Graham's layup at the 18:55 mark started the scoring for both teams, and the visitors took a 9-8 lead on a pair of free throws from
Dalton Barnes with 16 minutes left in the first half, but ERAU would finish the period with just six field goals made in 34 attempts for under 18 percent.
The Tritons didn't shoot too much better, making just nine field goals in 28 attempts against ERAU's defense, but Eckerd took a 25-16 lead into the lockeroom.
Embry-Riddle couldn't mount a comeback against the Tritons to begin the second half as the hosts started to heat up from distance, taking their largest lead, 55-40 on the last of five treys from Kevin Walsh at the 5:44 mark. But over the next four minutes the Eagles outscored the Tritons, 12-0, starting with two free throws from Graham. Miljkovic, who had been held in check offensively up until the last few minutes, scored four straight before a Graham triple made it 55-49 with 1:47 to go. An Eckerd turnover led to a Miljkovic three with 77 seconds left, making it 55-52, and after the Tritons missed a three attempt of their own on the next possession, it looked like ERAU would have a chance to possibly tie it up. However, Drushaun McLaurn grabbed the offensive rebound and put in a layup to make it a two-possession game.
The Eagles were off target on their next offensive possession and Eckerd finished the contest going 3-for-4 from the charity stripe to seal the win.
Graham grabbed six boards and recorded two steals to go along with his 17 points while Miljkovic registered eight boards, two block and two steals for ERAU. Barnes scored eight points with three rebounds.
The Eagles return to Daytona Beach to play host to Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern, with Saturday's tip set for 7 p.m. against the Lions and Wednesday's contest against the Sharks set for 7:30 p.m. in the ICI Center.
