@ERAUMSoccer's Upset Bid of No. 24 Florida Tech Spoiled in Overtime

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The unlikeliest of goals just a few seconds into Saturday's first overtime period allowed 24th-ranked Florida Tech escape the ERAU Soccer Stadium with a 2-1 win over host Embry-Riddle. An Eagle clearance attempt banged directly off the Panthers' (7-1, 4-0) Brandon Smiley a few yards in front of goal and ricocheted into the net for the visitors as they completed the comeback over the Eagles (1-5-1, 0-4-1), while staying perfect in Sunshine State Conference competition.

The hosts were the better team in the first half, and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break thanks to a Magnus Magnusson penalty kick goal, his second in as many games, in the 36th minute after Daniel Gylfason was taken down in the FIT box.

The Eagles held most of the possession in the opening period, and held the shot advantage, 6-4, after 45 minutes.

Florida Tech turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, earning 14 corner kicks in the period and recording 10 shots, with most of the shots coming off corner kicks and deflected out-of-bounds by the ERAU defense, leading to more corners.

The Panthers were finally able to break through in the 84th minute after a defensive miscue allowed Solomon Wheatley to put a shot past Richard Dearle in net to tie things up at 1-1.

ERAU couldn't get much going on the offensive end in the second half, registering only three shots, and none in the final 15 minutes of the period as the game moved to overtime, tied at 1-1 before the visitors got the huge break just 32 seconds into the extra time.

FIT owned a 15-9 advantage in shots, and had 18 corners to just two for the hosts.

ERAU will try to bounce back as they travel to Tampa on Wednesday, Oct. 11 for a 7 p.m. tilt against the Spartans.
