HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - The Embry-Riddle softball team fell twice to the 24th-ranked South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks on Sunday in a Sun Conference doubleheader. USCB took the first game, 4-0, before coming from behind for a 10-6 win in game two. The losses drop Embry-Riddle to 15-15 overall and 1-5 in conference, while USCB improves to 18-8 and 6-0 in league play.
Game 1 - USCB 4, ERAU 0
The Eagles threatened early in game one, but a pair of tough calls went against Embry-Riddle to cut the rally short. Anna Battison led off with a walk but was called out for leaving early during the next at-bat. Kailah Rain and Raquelli Bianco followed with back-to-back doubles, putting runners at second and third. But after USCB called time to have a team meeting in the circle, Bianco was called out for leaving second base. Robi Zimmerman then popped out to end the inning without the Blue and Gold scoring a run.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Sand Sharks scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead.
Haley Brown hit a two-run home run in the fifth to double USCB's lead to 4-0, and that would hold up as the final score.
Zimmerman (6-8) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits, walking three and striking out five. Rain was 2-for-3 with a double and stolen base and Bianco finished 1-for-3 with a double.
Kristy Cook (11-2) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Brown finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and Sam Boland went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
Game 2 - USCB 10, ERAU 6
In game two, Embry-Riddle got on the board first, scoring three times in the second inning. Haleigh Lewis opened the scoring with an RBI double to drive in Talia Barraco. After three straight walks, Kendall Jumper threw a pair of wild pitches, allowing Victoria Reed and Kelsey McDonnell to score, extending ERAU's lead to 3-0.
After the Sand Sharks scored one run in their half of the second, Embry-Riddle answered back with an unearned run in the top of the third to move ahead, 4-1.
USCB strung together five hits in the bottom of the third, including a two-run home run from Taylor Triplett, to score five runs and take the lead, 6-4.
The Blue and Gold broke out the long ball in the next two innings, getting solo home runs from Raquelli Bianco in the fourth and Haleigh Lewis in the fifth to tie the game at six.
Triplett gave USCB the lead again in the fifth with a two-out RBI single, and the Sand Sharks didn't relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. The Sand Sharks tacked on three more runs in the sixth to end up with a 10-6 win.
Bianco (8-7) took the loss, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits; she also was 1-for-4 with a home run at the plate. Lewis finished 2-for-3 with a double and a home run and Barraco was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Allie Rogers (1-0) got the win, pitching three innings of relief after Jumper went the first three. Rogers surrendered two runs on two hits and Jumper gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and five walks. Mariaha Sanborn went 2-for-4 with a double and for RBIs and Triplett finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.
The Eagles are back in action on Thursday, April 2 when they travel to West Palm Beach to face NCAA II Palm Beach Atlantic for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
