Softball Splits Doubleheader With Sailfish Thanks to Seventh-Inning Comeback

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After dropping the first game of the doubleheader 11-3, the Embry-Riddle softball team rallied late in game two to win 4-3 and split a pair of games with Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday.

The Eagles (8-6, 6-3 SSC) move to 6-10 all-time against the Sailfish (7-6, 6-3 SSC) and 4-6 on the road in the series.

GAME 1 | ERAU - 3, PBA - 11 (6 inn.)

Following Friday's offensive struggle, the Eagles found much more success on Saturday by striking in the first inning. Mahaliyah Sandridge started the doubleheader with a single to right and scored the first run moments later when Lia Johnson laid down a bunt down the third-base line. Johnson's speed forced PBA's third baseman to rush the throw, and she sent the ball deep into right field, allowing Sandridge to touch the plate.

The third frame provided a lot of fireworks with a combined five runs scored. Embry-Riddle padded its lead, starting with yet another leadoff hit, this time by Savannah Brockenbrough. Sandridge stepped in next and launched an RBI triple to left center field. After a strikeout, the shortstop took advantage of a wild pitch to score the Eagles' third run.

Unfortunately, the Sailfish bats woke up in the bottom half of the inning as PBA sent a pair of pitches over the outfield fence to tie the game 3-3. Another four runs were tacked on in the fourth due to a walk, two singles, a double, and a home run to put Embry-Riddle behind 7-3.

The Sailfish added four more runs over the fifth and sixth innings to enable the mercy rule and prevent the Eagles from having a chance to mount a comeback in the seventh.

Mallory Kinahan (3-3) allowed six earned runs over eight hits with two strikeouts through 3 1/3 innings pitched in the loss. Delaney Morgan made her second appearance in the circle for 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Sandridge made the most of her bump up in the batting order going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI in her first game at the top of the lineup.

GAME 2 | ERAU - 4, PBA - 3

Starting pitcher Kelsi Collins was locked in from the start as she struck out the side in the first inning.

After two scoreless frames, Embry-Riddle started the scoring once again, this time in the third with an RBI single up the middle of the infield by Maggie Scott to plate Sandridge.

However, the long ball proved to be a difficult challenge for the Eagles once again as PBA used a three-run shot to pull ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the inning.

Then in the fifth, Sandridge became the first Embry-Riddle softball player to smash a ball out of the park as the sophomore sent one over the center field fence to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

In the seventh inning, two walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs for the Eagles. Johnson then came up clutch with a bloop single to left field to score Brockenbrough and Delaney Morgan. Now with a 4-3 lead, Collins shut the door in the bottom of the seventh to salvage the series.

Sandridge mirrored her game-one performance in game two with a 2-for-3 line, two runs and an RBI.

Collins (5-3) gave up three earned runs on only four hits with eight strikeouts in the win.

Embry-Riddle steps away from conference play for the next three weeks. The Eagles next host Emory & Henry for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9 at 4 p.m.
